Featured Business Question and Answers: |
| Describe your business.Financial Planning Practice – I am the owner and principal. I have one support staff (Maree). I am in the business of advising and guiding people so that they achieve financial freedom. |
| |
| What three things do enjoy about your business?
Seeing the satisfaction and relief felt by clients when they know they actually have a plan, and can see themselves achieving their financial and lifestyle goals.
Meeting people from all walks of life – it’s amazing when you spend time with people, how interesting a lot of them are!
Because it’s my own business, my rules aren’t set by anyone else. This means I can set my own service standards, and can consistently deliver above and beyond these.

| What has been your greatest challenge in your business?
Unlike some women, I haven’t been dogged by the “boys club” mentality in my career. It has never been a hurdle for me – probably because I had enough respect for myself and my abilities, and that was evident in my dealings with my male colleagues? However, focussing on being a good Mum, and running a successful career, requires the ability to find balance. This is something that gets easier as the children get older, but in the early years was a total challenge, sometimes to the point when certain periods of time would become a blur!! |
| |
| What supports you in doing your business well?
I operate under the Australian Financial Services Licence of AXA. Their strength and support in terms of research, technical advice and compliance is invaluable. I could also not live without my personal assistant, Maree. She has been with me now for several years and is a crucial cog in the wheel of my business. |
| |
| How did you get started?
Many years ago (too many to mention) I was working overseas as
a Personal Assistant to a Financial Planner, within a large Consulting Firm. He suggested I consider financial planning as a career, as he thought I had the qualities required to succeed in that field. That was all the incentive I needed, and I proceeded to study while overseas, completing further study when I came back to Australia. I have now been in the financial services industry for 27 years (where did it go??) and qualified as a Certified Financial Planner® in 2000.
|
| |
| Who/what has been an influence / inspiration?
Graham (the financial planner mentioned above), for guiding and mentoring me in the very early years of my career. Also, a Manager I had when I was working with Westpac years ago. He instilled confidence in me, recognised my abilities and continually challenged me to be better at what I was doing.

| |
| What part of your spirit adds to your business? That thing inside me that never gives up on anything – persistence, persistence, persistence. There have been times when things were not “going great” but I seem to have this inert ability to just “take a breath”, reassess and move forward. I guess you could call this resilience, something I learnt from a very early age. |
| |
| What piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out?
It’s tough – don’t think it won’t be. But if you stay true to yourself and remain ethical in all that you do, you will enjoy success. There will be days when you want to walk away, but persist and you will achieve. |
|
|
| Is there anything else you would like to tell us? Not sure exactly what you want to know here? Do you mean personally or from a business perspective? Personally, I am a Mum with two beautiful children. I come from a family of six girls (I am the eldest) and my best “out of work” times are spent with these women. We have all shared some difficult times in the past, and they are a very big light in my world.
Business wise, I pride myself on delivering what I say I will deliver, and try and “over-deliver” where possible. As a result of my guidance, clients sit with peace of mind in terms of their financial situation.
