Featured Business Question and Answers: |
| What three words would describe your business best?Independent, cutting-edge, creative |
| |
| What do you love about the business?
The freedom to direct its course the way we choose. When we first started Tsunami we were in our early twenties. Occassionally when negotiating with advertisers they would ask to speak to our Manager. We got a blast out of telling them we were it. Also we love our fun office environment. The CD player is always on, we all get along really well and have a lot of laughs. Hula hoop competitions, dancing in the office, yoga at lunch time. There's a lot of space to be ourselves and it makes for a great working environment.

| |
| What don’t you like?
Well the flipside to not having to run big decisions by anyone is that any problems or issues that arise we have to deal with ourselves. There's been some tough times and some serious troubleshooting to undertake. Hiring, firing, debt collection, cash flow issues, etc. Times haven't always been rosy and there's been some monstrous disagreements, blow outs and tears but they get ironed out and its business as ususal. |
| |
| What is your grandest vision for the business?
To be a free national gloss magazine with huge feature stories, full page photos and lots of fun feature articles like Australia's 50 sexiest musicians and celebrity pets. We have so many ideas that we've got written down in one of our thousand notebooks. There's always been space restrictions with Tsunami so we haven't had the freedom to go crazy with our creative ideas. This is something we can not wait to do! |
| |
| Is there any other business you would like to be in if you could?
Yes, we would really like to try our hand at the publishing game, producing more creative publications but working more in a directorial role than as technicians. The film world beckons also. Claire and Alana met at University in Perth and the idea for a feature length script brought them together. They've been working on it for over a decade. Tsunami kind of got in the way but it is coming... stay tuned. |

| What one thing has added to your success in business?
Perserverance. It's been a long hard road that's for sure. Starting out with little to no experience in publishing it has been one serious learning curve. We taught ourselves the programs we had to use, we trained ourselves in advertising, invoicing, marketing, budgeting etc. We dove straight into the deep end. We didn't even budget the first couple of mags, we charged what we thought was the right price and not thinking very highly of ourselves back then we didn't charge enough to cover costs. We were very green and more often than not we learnt the hard way - that is by trial and error. In the early days we were just having fun, it was more about hanging out and doing creative stuff then running a business. We soon realised that if we intended to keep this baby going that we had to knuckle down and get it together. Along the way we met some wonderful mentors who shone a guiding light. |

| What advice would you give to someone just starting out? Don't expect it to happen all at once. Plan, project and budget. A business plan is so important. When times get tough stick in there. Join a business networking group and find yourself a mentor who has been in the game. Their knowledge is invaluable. Don't be afraid to ask for help. People in the know are generally very keen to share their knowledge. Get yourself into the public eye as much as possible. Network! Go to industry functions, meet with industry associates for lunch, it's always good to have friends who know what you're going through. |
| |
| What would you love your customers to know about your business?
We're really approachable and we're all for independents. Our editorial is fun and spirited and a little different to the norm. It's got soul! Oh yeah and our advertising works! Book an ad now if you haven't already! :) |
