Featured Artist Question and Answers: |
| How long have you been painting? I have been drawing for as long as I can remember, I started playing with paint in my teens & started painting as a fine artist rather than a graphic artist full time in 1997 |
| |
| How have you developed your skill in this area?
As a part of my apprenticeship in an advertising agency I attended Sydney school of Graphic design where illustration, colour & design, and all sorts of other necessary skills were taught. Since then it has always been a matter of self development, working at it & pushing yourself to do things you think you cant do always helps in your development.
In the advertising art studio, you didn’t have a choice about whether you could do something or not, you just had to do it.
That really forces you to grow!
|
| |
| |
| Who or what has been a major inspiration/influence in your painting? On one level my father encouraged me to draw as a child & spent lots of time showing me about dimension & perspective.. Since beginning to paint & teach my husband has been a major encourager & supporter as well as my family. On another level, I have been drawn more & more to paint.
God has so many amazing works of art & amazing colour combinations that He has created that it is impossible not to try & copy them
|
| |
| What do you hope to give with your art?
Personally I am always aiming to capture the essence of something as fluently & freely & simply as possible. To say more with as little detail as possible if that makes sense. It is a challenge to not overwork your art.
Professionally it would be having work exhibited in galleries around the world and having my work very sought after for its appeal & value
|
| |
| What do you get from your art?
I think art as well as any other form of creativity is a God given pressure valve for releasing tension. So I find painting takes my mind of anything else. I enjoy the challenge of creating something & looking at the finished product. I also enjoy seeing other people get enjoyment from something I do. |
| |
| What has been your greatest moment with your painting?
I can’t think of a particular moment, except when I break through in something I have been struggling with.
Being commissioned by a boutique 5 star hotel to paint 225 original paintings because he loved my art was a bit exciting though! Every time I sell a painting is still exciting even though I have been doing it for a long time. Walking in to the first opening night of an exhibition & seeing the little red dots on your paintings is always a thrill as well.
|
| |
| Where would you like to take your art?
Everywhere |
| |
| What would you say to someone who is interested in taking up painting?
I think it is great for everyone to have a paint, sometimes you never know you have a gift until you start doing something. I really found out by accident, & when I taught art I would often see the same thing. Enjoy it & don’t be too serious & find a good art class.
For someone who wanted to paint as a full time living, I would
say be prepared to work twice as hard as most, you have to be very mentally disciplined & not sensitive to criticism.
|
| |
| What part of your spirit adds to your success as an artist? Definitely Gods spirit within me, he inspires me, sometimes teaches me. |
| |
| Who do you know that is a ‘spirited’ woman?
In the art world of days gone by I would say Mary Cassat & Australian Vida Lahay. Sunshine Coast artist Linda Vario is certainly a very spirited artist. Apart from art I know my 3 daughters are certainly all very spirited women. |
| |
| Is there anything else you would like to let us know about you?I think we live in a very fast pace world today & often don’t take time to stop & smell the roses. When I paint I like to depict “time out” or paint overlooked things that we often don’t notice because of our business. Even though that is what I paint I am also guilty of being too busy. But I would like to encourage all your ladies to take time out & appreciate what God has put here for us to enjoy! |
