Featured Artist Question and Answers: |
| How long have you been painting/illustrating? Since I was knee-high to a gecko! But it wasn't until three years ago that I turned my passion into a full-time profession! My book illustration work has only evolved in the last two years. |
| |
| How have you developed your skill in this area?
I don't know that it was ever 'developed' - rather, it was always just there like an untapped gene, part of my personality which I hadn't discovered yet. I feel very blessed that I found it! Someone recently described my style as anthropomorphic...(I dare you to say that 10 times in a row!). If you needed to fit me into a box then this would be it, but I like to think of it as pure Michelle Pikeism. |
| |
| |
| Who or what has been a major inspiration/influence in your painting? My love for the Australian environment, its flora and fauna and of course the great Aussie sense of humour - these have all been huge influences in my painting. A lot of the inspiration for the storylines however come from my childhood experiences or even now as a Mum. My painting gives me an opportunity to take a trip down memory lane but to also express the more 'trying' times with a positive slant. Sometimes you've got to laugh, or you'll cry - isn't that how it goes?!
|
| |
| What do you hope to give with your art?
A belly-aching laugh! If you're not laughing, then you don't get it. |
| |
| What do you get from your art?
Freedom of expression. To put my own stamp on the art industry. I get to say "art doesn't have to be serious" and "yes, you can hang it in the toilet without offending me!" |
| |
| What has been your greatest moment with your painting?
When my son announced he liked one so much, that he wanted it for his room. My boys are my harshest critics - it was like winning the Archibald! |
| |
| Where would you like to take your art?
I am already on my way there! My artwork is so ideal as a tourism product, that I am producing a range of merchandise including books, jigsaw puzzles, tea-towels, calendars and greeting cards (just to name a few). I have had fantastic support from domestic retailers already and hope to open this up internationally next year. Who knows, we may even see a Michelle Pike outlet at every Australian airport! |
| |
| What would you say to someone who is interested in taking up painting?
Do it because you love it and don't be afraid to be different. |
| |
| What part of your spirit adds to your success as an artist? My thirst for life and knowledge. I want to know everything and do everything - I've already accepted that I will die frustrated at not being able to achieve this! |
| |
| Who do you know that is a ‘spirited’ woman?
Sorrel Wilby, Melissa Schembri and Michelle Vendrell... whenever I meet with these women, I feel reinvigorated - they remind me that it's very okay to expect the world and to go and get it! |
| |
| Is there anything else you would like to let us know about you? I am a published Book Illustrator with such companies as Scholastic Australia, Harper Collins and Push Productions. Following recent interest expressed by a publishing company for me to write children's books for my illustrations, I am now studying a BA in Communications and Design with a major in Creative Writing. |
