Featured Artist Question and Answers: |
| How long have you been a performer? Well, I did do bits when I was a kid but I actually came to it a bit later in life...in my thirties even! So now it’s over a decade I guess....hmmm |
| |
| How have you developed your skill in this area?
I’ve been blessed to work with amazing people. I’ve come at music from a kind of different angle. I haven’t done the covers band thing ever...and I really wouldn’t mind doing the odd gig like that actually!
I started out in an original all girl band, ‘Mettaphor’ and went from there to working with the totally amazing Linsey Pollak in various ‘out there’ outfits over the past few years.
This has always been music on the edge...improvisation. The longest project we did together was totally unique (still haven’t heard of it happening anywhere else in the world actually) ‘qwerty’ was Linsey, myself and Peter Rowe, a man living with autism and using Facilitated Communication to tap out words. I was like the bridge between his words and the music. I facilitated and turned his words into song to music being created in the moment by Linsey. When we walked on stage we had no idea what was going to happen, totally cutting edge impro...it was a wild ride and i have to say i do miss

| Who or what has been a major inspiration/influence in your music? Well there are many musicians and singers I love from Nina Simone to Col Porter to Joan Armatrading to Led Zepplin to Patsy Cline to Michael Frente to Leonard Cohen to Ani Defranco to Cesaer Evoria....it just goes on and on.
But I have to say on a more personal level there have been a small band of people that have really supported me to explore my voice and spirit and they include Linsey Pollak, Frankie Armstrong, Brian Martin, Gary Ward, Gizelle Lovasg & Steve Pead.

| What do you hope to give with your singing?
Joy, insights into the human condition, inspiration. I’m a bit of an open book as a writer so people do get to identify with aspects of my own journey through my lyrics. I guess I’m willing to share my idiosyncracies, weaknesses and my joys through song.
Gary Ward terms my lyrics to be ‘dark edged positivity’ and I really like that as I like to reflect my perception of reality...and that means dark and light....

| What do you get from your music?
Joy, insights into my own human condition, inspiration!!! Healing. It’s a spiritual experience for me, and so important to me...up there with breathing, eating, sex...... |
| |
| What has been your greatest moment with your performing?
Hard to pick one really....there was this time in Linsey’s studio when our trio ‘VOX’ were performing songs that had taken the words of Michael Leunig’s poetry and turned them to song and we were performing them for Michael Leunig and another guy....it was a bit nerve wracking but there were some moments where I opened my eyes and he was really into it which was very cool. That and having lunch afterwards was actually way more exciting than the actual concert we did with him...I guess it was more real...something like that. |
| |
| Where would you like to take your performing?
Well at this stage I’m desiring to travel the world. I’m very excited about this latest project ‘Delany Ward’, Gary and I are writing absolutely amazing material and we are both ready to ‘go’ with it all. |

| 8. What would you say to someone who is interested in taking up singing?
Do it!!! It’s just so wonderful. As far as I'm concerned all of us must sing, and together. It’s not just about performing, singing in a group is an awesome experience. I’m actually one of the facilitators with Brian Martin’s New World Rhythm Choir and it’s totally ‘wow’ to be with 30 – 40 people singing 4 part harmony. It creates a real sense of community. You know if we were all singing regularly there just wouldn’t be the fussing and fighting that goes on. By making music together, bridges of understanding are built. It put things into perspective. I guess music demands that you be in the moment and there is no greater path to inner peace and knowing than being present!

| What part of your spirit adds to your success as an artist? Hmmm can spirit be dissected into parts? I don’t know about that really.
What I do know is that opening up, accessing my creativity and my voice has been the greatest healing for me, and so as Ihave done this my spirit comes closer to the surface and therefore my creativity becomes stronger and my spirits voice gets stronger and so on and so on and so on...
|
| |
| Who do you know that is a ‘spirited’ woman?
Oh wow I know a few of them. 3 creative women feature strongly in my life at present (well 4 but you’ve already done a story on Kath Williams!) and they are Florence Teillet, Yvonne Corstophine and Di Mills. Dear friends and total legends they are. |
| |
| Is there anything else you would like to let us know about you?Just that I am totally blessed! I give thanks for all the wonder and magic in my life. And I have this little chant that I do every morning and night...
All life comes to me with ease, joy and glory! And it really works I tell you...
How does it get any better than that!?!
