Featured Artist Question and Answers: |
| How long have you been painting? I have sought to do some form of art since I was a teenager however it is only in recent years that I have developed a more focussed approach. |
| |
| How have you developed your painting?
I began by drawing pictures copied from illustrations in books and magazines. Later on, I went to a wide variety of workshops and classes including life drawing, collage, printmaking, and ceramics whenever I could afford to fit them in with family life. About 6 years ago I had the opportunity to study theory and practice full time at art school where I especially enjoyed experimental methods to art.

| |
| |
| Who or what has been a major inspiration/influence in your painting? The teachers I have met while attending the workshops and classes have all been influential in encouraging and extending my art practice. I read art books and go to exhibitions whenever I can to gain access and insights into other artists. I particularly love the work of Australian artists Rosalie Gascoigne, Charles Blackman, Kevin Lincoln and Fred Williams.
My work is usually inspired from my surroundings –the natural world and items of interest in and around my home. It is also inspiring to talk and work with like minded people.
|
| |
| What do you hope to give with your art?
A different way of seeing
|
| |
| What has been your greatest moment with your painting?
It is always gratifying to receive feedback about my art and it is undeniably a thrill to sell work but it is also deeply satisfying to walk past a piece of art that sits in my home and know that “I did that”. |
| |
| Where would you like to take your art?
I would just like to continue to put my ideas into practice. Finding time and energy is a continual challenge. I would also like to keep extending my exhibition folio.
There is another idea that I keep in the back of my mind too. I have been to a professional gallery and workshop in Melbourne that is specifically for adult artists with a disability (see artsproject.org.au) and would love to be involved in something similar.
|
| |
| What would you say to someone who is interested in taking up painting?
Art offers the individual so many ways in which to be expressive. There are basics in art technique that can guide people especially at the beginning of their practice, but it is also important to explore a range of materials available until you find something that suits you. I would also suggest that things be kept simple, initially at least. |
| |
| What part of your spirit adds to your success as an artist?
I have had to be economic with time and practical in my art practice. These combine with my willingness to be open to new ideas and a desire to see beauty in the perfectly ordinary. |
| |
| Who do you know that is a ‘spirited’ woman? I am thankful to several spirited women whom I know well and others that just briefly touch my life, but in common these women have a unique view of the world with a special blend of energy; wisdom, gentleness, sensitivity, honesty and humour.
