Featured Artist Question and Answers: |
| How long have you been singing? Since I was a child, I grew up in a family of singers, so I have a natural ability for harmony, and I was in my first band at about 16…but didn’t really take it seriously until 1987 when I was student on Bondi Youth Wave. |
| |
| How have you developed your singing?
Mainly by playing live, spending a number of years as a backing vocalist with lots of different people, going to millions of gigs and watching, inspiration and learning from other musicians….. lots of listening to music and my favourite artists . I am self taught and have studied technique in the last few years, and had a wonderful mentor in my duo partner of 6 years, Sue Bond…who is a wonderful jazz singer and teacher.
Still dreaming about going to the Conservatorium

| Who or what has been a major inspiration/influence in your singing? So many things…..My dad Tony, and his four part vocal quartet from the 60s and 70s…The Freeways who were big on the Sydney Club circuit…..and my grandfather Henry, also Aussie singer Kevin Bennett of the Flood who is my favourite singer in the world, Bonnie Raitt, Eva Cassidy, Nina Simone, and too many artists and bands to name that I love the music of and draw inspiration from. And my love of Blues music, that has grown since I started playing 5 years or so ago with local legend piano player Al Hensley of the Big Easy

| |
| What do you hope to give with your art?
To an audience……Enjoyment, entertainment, a release from day to day stress, fun and to my students….empowerment, confidence, passion, and to share the gift I have with them so they develop it for themselves, and enjoy it as much as I do.
|
| |
| What do you get from your art?
A lot of fun, fulfilment of my passion to play music with other musicians, and challenge to always improve, meeting great people, a buzz entertaining an audience, and a sense of satisfaction and joy when I see others learning and loving music.

| What has been your greatest moment with your singing?
Many years ago I was singing for some kids with disabilities at a special school in Sydney, and a young boy there who had never spoken took a liking to my keyboard, so I sat with him for a little while and let him play it…he loved it so I gave it to him, and not long after that he began to speak.
A high point for me as a performer was playing sax with Adelaide blues legend Chris Finnen at Sunshine Coast Blues Festival a couple of years ago, and working now with my band The Blues Shakers.

| |
| Where would you like to take your performing?
Festivals around Australia, and I’d love to go back to the USA and spend some more time there just hanging out and playing. I plan to record an album of original songs in 2009 too. |

| What would you say to someone who is interested in taking up singing?
Start singing !!! Sing along with everything, find a teacher to guide you in what you need to work on, and do a lot of listening to music. |
