Featured Artist Question and Answers:
How long have you been painting? I have been painting full-time (in between being a wife, mum to two sons and a daughter, and homemaker / interior designer / flower arranger / cake decorator / baker / chef / landscaper / gardener / cleaning lady / dressmaker / nurse / teacher / counsellor / accountant / makeup and grooming consultant for my family) since 2000.

How have you developed your art? I have been taught and tutored by the works painted and books published by artists and experts, and the practical advice and responses given by artist (and non-artist) friends, family, gallery owners etc. Other than that, by painting, painting, and painting some more…

Who or what has been a major influence/inspiration in your painting? Many years ago I met an amazing man. I owe him my life. My art is inspired by, and painted for him. He is the man with the holes in his hands, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. It says in the Bible, in Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Art in nature – the work of God’s hand - must be the other major influence in my work. God is, first and foremost, the most powerful, most creative, most artistically skilled force imaginable, and all I’ve learnt to do is journey to where the River flows, and tap into that flow. Ideas, imagination, colours, paint, insight and skill… all just flow, when I enter that sacred space where God leads. And all I need to do is follow.

What do you hope to give with your art? I want my work to speak into the present and the future about truth I’ve learnt during my time on earth. It’s more than painting a pretty or pleasing picture – it’s about communicating a message. “A picture paints a thousand words…” That’s what art should do. And each work should speak relevantly to each of it’s viewers, touch where touch is needed, comfort where comfort is needed, offer hope where hope is needed, bring healing where healing is needed, open eyes that are blind and ears that are deaf and cause the lame to leap with joy, and bring something BEAUTIFUL into our world.

What do you get from your art? Art is who I am. It is not what I do, it’s who I am. If I don’t paint and write and create, I die inside. I didn’t choose it, it chose me. Woven into the deepest fibre of my being is creativity that just has to find its place in this world. It is what I was born to be.

What has been your greatest moment with your painting? I have seen people weep as their hearts are touched, I’ve seen them stand speechless and in awe, I’ve seen lives touched and changed… Those are the greatest moments of all…

Where would you like to take your art? My vision is to “create unique and contemporary paintings that lovingly present the way, the truth, and the life to humanity, from homes and businesses all over the world.”

What would you say to someone who is interested in taking up painting? Everything you need is within you – your message, your truth and your passion. The technical skills can be learnt from others – but your reason for painting comes from within. Find that, and focus on it… always keeping that in front of you because that’s what you’ll need to carry you through. Become a sponge, absorb everything you can from any source you can, and in time you can become more selective, more refined in your choice of input into yourself as artist.

What part of your spirit adds to your success as a painter? The determination to pursue my purpose in life… the persistence to never, never give up… and the desire to run the race set before me with a spirit of excellence.

Who do you know that is a ‘spirited’ woman? I see women everywhere who are strong, spirited, passionate, determined, focussed and give their all in life. I think being a mum is one role where these qualities are essential requirements – it takes your all to give your all! If I have to select just one lady to mention as a spirited woman it would have to be my daughter, Nikita. She’s 18 and a force to be reckoned with - a bright, radiant, unforgettable burst of colour into every life she touches…

Is there anything else you would like to let us know about you?Our home is on “The Retreat,” 10 glorious acres of rainforest registered as Land for Wildlife, in Palmwoods. We are also members of the Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc. which means that we serve as surrogate parents for injured and orphaned wildlife – so you never know what little creatures you might find in residence. Visits to the Gallery@Home and My Studio On The Hill are welcomed by appointment. Visit my website at www.meloneysteyl.com.au, drop me an email to art@meloneysteyl.com.au or phone me on 0418 672 428. I’d love to hear from you! Also… A solo exhibition titled “Great Southland” is being held at the Suncoast Auditorium (cnr Schubert and Kiel Mountain Road, Woombye) until the end of November. Grab a cappuccino and a delicious bite to eat at the Vines Café and enjoy the artwork…
